At Nemera in Neuenburg-sur-Rhin, Germany, precision is non-negotiable. This company, which specializes in the manufacture of plastic medical devices, relies entirely on dimensional accuracy to ensure that every dispenser, inhaler, or pen injector delivers the exact prescribed dose of medication. To achieve this, it trusts Mitutoyo measurement and inspection technologies.

The Neuenburg plant has just taken a new technological step by equipping itself with a high-resolution industrial tomography system, supplied by RX Solutions, a Mitutoyo partner. This cutting-edge technology supports the ultra-precise production of drug delivery devices for patients suffering from glaucoma, asthma, psoriasis, or diabetes. With its 700 employees and 13 production halls covering 11,000 m², this site is Nemera’s largest production center.

The scale of the challenge is considerable: every year, Nemera’s plants produce more than a billion dispensing systems that supply health care in more than 54 countries. In this context, every actuation must guarantee a perfectly controlled dose. Between drastic legal regulations and the particularly strict industrial standards of the medical sector, the requirements for measurement technology reach extremely high levels.

Quality control as a priority

Entering Neuenburg’s metrology center, you immediately understand why Nemera’s motto “Patients first” takes on its full meaning. The facility is impressive in scale: one entire room houses 24 coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) equipped with multiple probes for 3D measurement, while a second houses eight optical measuring devices. The technology arsenal is rounded out by a Contracer CV2100 contour measuring instrument. One thing unites all this equipment: it bears the Mitutoyo signature.

“Our partnership with Mitutoyo is a long-term one – we have been working together with complete trust for 32 years,” says Sven Kister, Head of the Metrology Group. “We may be particularly demanding customers when it comes to measurement technology, but Mitutoyo always delivers. Whether it is Wolfgang Wassner, our main contact, or the experts at other Mitutoyo sites for the most complex challenges, we consistently get fast and precise answers.”

Nemera’s commitment to quality is also reflected in its staffing. While eight specialists work at the heart of the metrology center, around fifty other employees provide continuous quality control from decentralized stations, organized in three teams that relieve one another without interruption.

Integration of the CT system

Neuenburg’s technology park is now enriched by a high-resolution industrial computed tomography (CT) system from RX Solutions. To make this strategic choice, Nemera organized a genuine benchmark, inviting six specialized suppliers to present their solutions.

In the end, RX Solutions, a Mitutoyo partner, was the one that stood out with a particularly convincing proposal.

“The RX Solutions Explorer EasyTom S ticked all our boxes,” explains the team. “It perfectly combines scanning speed, high resolution, and ease of use – an ideal combination for our 3D metrology needs, whether standard tasks or more advanced applications. Its scan performance outperforms the competition, its resolution is impressive, and preparation is child’s play: the parts to be analyzed can be prepared in their fixtures outside the machine, which saves precious time. Another major advantage: native compatibility with our evaluation software. This seamless integration greatly facilitates the use of measurement data – a crucial point for our certifications.”

Nemera now uses its CT technology to revolutionize its inspection processes: ultra-stable 3D measurement of components, fine detection of material inhomogeneities, and identification of cavities in materials. Tomography is particularly valuable for analyzing injection-molded micro-parts 2 to 4 mm in diameter. No more external subcontracting – this in-house capability generates substantial savings in time and budget.

Following a comparative selection, RX Solutions emerged as the best option: a strong innovator in a landscape of long-established manufacturers, whose strategic cooperation with Mitutoyo provided an additional guarantee.

“The equipment won us over technically, the option of adding a sample loader is also important for automating our processes, but it was really the RX Solutions–Mitutoyo tandem that made the difference,” emphasizes Sven Kister. “We knew that with this collaboration, we would always have quality support.”

Several months after commissioning, the Explorer EasyTom S from RX Solutions has established itself as a cornerstone of in-house quality control, particularly for analyzing parts that conventional methods could not decipher correctly. The return on investment is already taking shape: “We are now outperforming our former external provider, with payback expected within three years.”

A metrology ecosystem serving performance

Nemera’s metrology department impresses with the scale of its arsenal: about 3,400 tools and measuring instruments carefully listed in SAP. Autonomy is a major asset – most of this equipment is not only born in the internal design offices but also takes shape in the company’s tooling workshop.
The current focus is on standardization, with a major project: all new tooling, clamping systems, and workpiece holders are now based on a common platform, each accompanied by its complete validation and qualification file.

Mitutoyo supports Nemera in this transformation, notably through its subsidiary KOMEG, based in Völklingen in Saarland, which specializes in the custom manufacture of workpiece holders and clamping devices.

On the metrology software side, Nemera also trusts the Mitutoyo ecosystem: MCOSMOS drives the tactile measuring devices while QV-PAK manages the optical devices. The arsenal is rounded out by specialized modules such as MCOSMOS-GEOPAK and MeasurLink, which notably simplify compliance verification. Proof of this successful integration: all Mitutoyo machines communicate with SAP, including the oldest in the fleet, which proudly displays its 19 years of service.

Global harmonization and proprietary product development

Nemera’s six production sites – spread across France, Germany, Poland, Brazil, and the United States – are preparing to adopt a unified technological approach, with the same measuring equipment and software on every continent.

This harmonization comes with an ambitious standardization effort carried out jointly with Mitutoyo, in strict compliance with the new EN ISO 13485 directive governing medical devices. The goal: to create a group reference framework that guarantees quality consistency on an international scale.
At the same time, Nemera is taking a new strategic step with the launch of its business unit dedicated to proprietary products. While other sites already develop and manufacture dispensers and dosing systems under the Nemera brand, Neuenburg is joining this innovation dynamic. The German site has just designed its first product: a revolutionary pen for the parenteral administration of medication.

This ramp-up is logically accompanied by technological investments: Nemera will install a dedicated metrology section for Neuenburg’s “Own IP” unit, an expansion that fits naturally into the continuity of the partnership with Mitutoyo.

A complete technology partnership for the future

Nemera’s Mitutoyo arsenal goes well beyond tactile and optical measuring machines. The company relies on a whole range of precision instruments: comparators, calipers, gauges, and many other essential everyday tools. This philosophy extends to the tool-making workshop, where high-precision milling machines rely on Mitutoyo measuring equipment, while laser measuring devices handle the calibration of the electrical discharge machining (EDM) machines.
The investment momentum continues: after the 2024 acquisitions, Nemera is already planning the integration of two new Mitutoyo CMMs for tactile measurement.

But for Sven Kister, the strength of this collaboration goes beyond the mere technical excellence of the products: “When we face a measurement problem, there is no need for a hotline – a simple call to Wolfgang Wassner is enough. He and his colleagues always respond. We even take advantage of Mitutoyo’s AUKOM training to certify our employees as measurement technicians. That is what a true global partnership is, one that projects us into the future together.”
