Master the structure of your composites

Carbon composites, sandwich parts, honeycomb structures or composite tanks: composite materials make structures lighter while keeping excellent mechanical performance. But their behavior depends directly on their internal structure, which often can’t be assessed through a simple visual inspection.

Inspect without cutting or destroying

Industrial X-ray CT is a non-destructive testing (NDT) solution that lets you inspect the inside of composite parts without cutting them. It helps manufacturers detect internal defects, qualify their manufacturing processes and better understand how fiber orientation influences mechanical performance.

Why CT in the composites industry? Understand materials better, reduce quality risks

In composites, a part’s quality depends not only on its geometry but also on its internal structure. CT provides the information needed to qualify materials, secure developments and improve process repeatability.

  • Detect porosity and delamination before they affect mechanical performance.
  • Qualify fiber orientation and distribution to better understand how the material behaves.
  • Reduce destructive testing while keeping a complete view of the internal structure.
  • Validate new materials and processes before industrialization.
  • Improve simulation models with real 3D data.
  • Secure critical parts before assembly or entry into service.

This information is decisive because fiber distribution directly affects the part’s strength, internal stresses and fatigue properties.

The analyses that secure your composite parts

structure composite tomographie

Qualify the internal structure of composite materials

Fiber orientation, length and distribution directly influence a part’s mechanical properties. CT lets you observe and characterize the internal structure with no cutting or destructive preparation.
  • analysis of fiber orientation and concentration;
  • characterization of carbon, glass or hybrid structures;
  • 3D visualization of internal reinforcements;
  • assessment of material homogeneity.

Detect defects before they become critical

Internal defects can compromise the mechanical performance, fatigue resistance or service life of a composite part. CT identifies them before testing or entry into service.

  • detection of porosity and inclusions;
  • identification of delamination zones;
  • inspection of sandwich and honeycomb structures;
  • analysis of impregnation defects.

Understand and predict material behavior

Beyond quality control, CT data lets you better understand how internal structure influences a composite’s real-world performance.

  • generation of 3D models usable in simulation;
  • characterization of material properties;
  • improvement of numerical models;
  • validation of design assumptions.

Composites FAQ

Can CT quantify fiber orientation in a composite part?
Yes. Dedicated analysis software represents each fiber as a tensor and determines whether the distribution is isotropic and homogeneous.
Can delamination that is invisible on the surface be detected?
Yes. CT detects delamination zones, porosity and inclusions inside the part, none of which are visible to the eye.
What resolution is needed to analyze individual fibers?
Analyzing individual fibers generally requires submicron resolution, available with the Nano range.
Can a scanned composite part be compared to its CAD model?
Yes. Automatic comparison lets you visualize internal fiber deviations from the nominal CAD file.
Does CT work on multi-material composite parts?
Yes, including parts that combine a composite and a metal insert, with dedicated correction software such as Horus.
