X-Act drives the entire acquisition process  —from real-time 2D radiography to 3D tomography—within a single interface, designed to deliver accurate results whatever the sample being inspected. The data acquired this way then serves as the basis for the reconstruction step, to obtain a usable 3D volume

Developed by RX Solutions, X-Act is not just control software: it is an advanced solution that integrates a large number of features and scan strategies,  to adapt to any type of part and inspection need. For the most specific needs, X-Act can also be enriched with custom-made modules: advanced automation, AI analysis, and customized interfaces.

Its strength: adapting to all user profiles. Simple and intuitive, X-Act makes 3D tomography accessible to everyone, from expert to beginner, thanks to three usage modes:
  • X-Act Expert — full control with advanced settings, for experienced users
  • Guided acquisition — semi-automated settings, step by step
  • Wizard — fully automated acquisition, for maximum time savings

X-ACT: a powerful software for your imaging inspection steps

Radioscopy

Real-time inspection

Radiography is easy and fast with X-Act. Software filters are included to improve sharpness and contrast. 3D measurements can be taken directly on the radiographs.

Acquisition

Radiographic projections over 360°

The part, previously positioned in the equipment, makes a 360° rotation. During this rotation, a set of radiographic projections is acquired from different angles

Reconstruction

Obtaining a 3D volume

All the projections made during the acquisition phase are reconstituted as a 3D volume. The volume thus generated will serve as the basis for the third, optional step: post-processing
3D-printed part to be scanned
3D-printed part to be scanned
2D radiograph of the part
2D radiograph of the part

2D radiography with X-ACT

With X-Act, radiography is fast and accessible directly from the control station: the part is viewed in real time

  • Live inspection — immediate visualization of the sample, ideal for a quick check, sorting or positioning before the scan
  • Instant defect detection — a missing weld, an assembly defect or the presence of a foreign body can be identified immediately with a simple radiographic shot
  • Software filters included — improved sharpness and contrast directly in the interface, without third-party software
  • Measurements directly on the radiograph — Possibility of taking measurements directly on the 2D radiographic data, with real-time tracking of the part’s movements.

Why switch to 3D Computed tomography?

2D radiography has a limit: it projects a three-dimensional volume onto a single image, with a risk of superimposition and hidden defects. 3D tomography removes this limit by providing access to:

  • A complete internal inspection — every structural detail visible, with no hidden areas
  • Precise dimensional measurements — including on internal geometries inaccessible in 2D
  • An in-depth non-destructive analysis — porosities, inclusions, cracks, internal assemblies…

X-Act drives this 3D acquisition with the same simplicity as radiography, thanks to 14 different acquisition modes to adapt to each geometry, material and production constraint.

Which acquisition modes are available with X-Act?

X-Act tomographie - 14 modes scan

Step-by-step CT scan

This is the most standard acquisition mode. The part rotates in increments: it stops at each angle for the acquisition of a projection, before resuming its rotation for the next projection.

Ideal for scans requiring maximum precision per projection.

Continuous CT scan

The part, on its rotation stage, rotates continuously through 360 degrees during the acquisition, without interruption between projections. From several hundred to several thousand 2D projections (slices) are acquired to allow the desired 3D volume to be determined by calculation.

A faster scan, optimized to obtain image quality almost identical to that of a step-by-step scan

Limited-angle CT scan

The acquisition deliberately avoids certain rotation angles, for example when the shape or bulk of the part prevents a full rotation.

Useful when the geometry of the part or its environment does not allow a full rotation. Dedicated processing makes it possible to obtain good image quality from 180° of rotation.

Variable-angle CT scan

A scan optimized to save time in certain directions and acquire better-quality data in the directions that provide the most information or are more difficult to penetrate.

Useful for flat objects that show significant differences in absorption depending on the direction

Stack CT scan

The imaging device or the sample itself moves vertically to perform several scans at different heights, thus extending the field of analysis in the vertical direction.

Makes it possible to cover larger samples and therefore to extend the scan volume of the system. Also makes it possible to refine the resolution on parts that are taller than they are wide, by zooming in on each scanned section.

Detector Shift CT scan

The detector shifts horizontally and/or vertically to reconstitute a composite image, extending the field of analysis to the maximum dimensions of the system.

Makes it possible to scan large-diameter parts or to increase the scan resolution — can be combined with all the other acquisition modes.

Virtual centering

The center of rotation can be adjusted virtually without mechanically repositioning the part. The equipment’s motion axes make it possible to keep the region of interest in the field of view throughout the rotation, even when it is not aligned with the axis of the rotary stage.

A significant time saving on part mounting and setup. Can be combined with all the other acquisition modes.

Region Of Interest CT scan

The acquisition directly targets a precise area of the sample rather than the entire part. Makes it possible to obtain maximum resolution on a specific detail, without scanning the entire part.

Ideal for exploratory studies requiring a high level of detail on a targeted area, without having to scan the entire part at high resolution.

ROI CT post-scan

From a first quick or global tomography, target the area of interest directly from the tomography images and perform a high-quality scan of that area.

Useful for precisely identifying and locating the areas of interest for detailed scans.

Laminography

Three-dimensional investigation without a full rotation, but by lateral displacement: designed for flat, large samples. Result: a volume reconstructed in 2.5D, inspectable layer by layer.

Particularly useful for high-resolution scans of flat, bulky parts (electronic boards, composite plates) which, with a conventional method, would lose resolution as they move away from the source.

Anti-ring shift

Reduction of ring artifacts during the acquisition phase, obtained by continuously changing the position of the pixels in the sample’s frame of reference.

Useful for obtaining images free of ring artifacts, in particular on cylindrical samples for which the software corrections at reconstruction are less effective. Compatible with the other scan modes.

Helical CT scan

Combination of a continuous rotation and a simultaneous vertical displacement, along a helical trajectory.

Makes it possible to extend the vertical field of view while keeping a smooth acquisition, for elongated parts – with, in addition, a significant reduction of horizontal-plane artifacts.

6-pass tomography CT scan

An optimized acquisition sequence tightening the angular acquisitions over time.

Useful for obtaining the best images on a sample likely to change (change of state, movement)

4D CT tomography

Dynamic acquisition making it possible to follow the evolution of a sample over time (movement, deformation, reaction…).

Useful for observing a phenomenon in progress rather than a frozen state.

FAQ X-ACT ACQUISITION

What is X-Act software?
X-Act is RX Solutions’ proprietary software that drives the entire acquisition process, from real-time 2D radiography to 3D tomography, whichever tomography system is used.
What is the difference between 2D radiography and 3D tomography?
2D radiography provides a real-time image useful for a quick check or the detection of visible defects, but it superimposes the internal structures on a single image. 3D tomography reconstructs a complete volume from multiple projections, allowing an internal inspection with no hidden areas and precise dimensional measurements.
How many acquisition modes does X-Act offer?
X-Act offers 14 different acquisition modes (continuous rotation, step by step, limited angles, stack, shift, helical, laminography, region of interest, 4D CT…), which can be combined according to the geometry and the material of the sample.
Is X-Act suitable for beginners as well as experts?
Yes. X-Act offers three usage modes suited to each profile: X-Act Expert for total control, Guided acquisition for step-by-step assisted settings, and Wizard for fully automated acquisition.
What happens to the acquisition once it has been carried out with X-Act?
The acquired projections serve as the basis for the reconstruction step, which generates the 3D volume usable for analysis and measurement
