From 2D projections to a usable 3D volume: the reconstruction that makes the difference

The projections acquired with X-Act Acquisition are only an intermediate step: it is the reconstruction that determines the final quality of the 3D volume, and therefore the reliability of any analysis or measurement carried out afterward.

X-Act Reconstruction brings together, in a single interface, all the algorithms needed to refine the geometry, correct artifacts and improve contrast—to obtain reliable results whatever the sample.

This suite of tools goes far beyond a simple volume calculation: it adapts to the nature of each dataset—metal parts, multi-material assemblies, or data from external equipment. For the most demanding reconstructions, X-Act can be complemented by Horus, our advanced reconstruction module, or enriched with custom-made modules designed for specific production needs.

Once reconstructed, the 3D volume is ready for analysis, measurement and inspection—or can be further refined using post-processing tools (VGSTUDIO Max or even Dragonfly)

X-ACT: from acquisition to 3D reconstruction

X-Act is built on a shared software base that makes it possible to view and manipulate images at every step: changing contrast levels, applying filters, monitoring the reconstruction in real time. Each reconstruction tool is driven by a dedicated module, which allows RX Solutions to add new features with each update.

Radioscopy

Immediate visual inspection

Before launching a full scan, X-Act lets you view the sample in real time: built-in sharpness and contrast filters, with measurements possible directly on the radiographic image.

Acquisition

Projections from every angle

Positioned on the rotation stage, the part makes a complete turn while the system captures a series of X-ray projections at different angles.

Reconstruction

From 2D to a usable 3D volume

These projections are assembled by calculation to reconstruct a complete 3D volume of the part, ready for analysis or for the optional post-processing step

Advanced correction and optimization tools

X-Act Reconstruction offers a wide range of features: from standard corrections, included as standard and applicable in a few clicks, to more advanced tools for the most demanding datasets. Combinable with one another according to the needs of each scan, they make it possible to systematically obtain the best possible rendering, whatever the sample or the complexity of the material.

Reconstruction: geometric fine-tuning

X-Act Reconstruction offers advanced control over the 9 parameters defining the acquisition geometry, with dedicated optimization tools for precise adjustment.
  • Correction of datasets affected by geometric inaccuracies—without a new scan, for maximized image quality and reliable measurements
  • Reconstruction of external data—this flexible approach also makes it possible to reconstruct datasets acquired on other imaging platforms.

Reconstruction: drift compensation

During very-high-resolution scans of long duration, slight movements of the sample or its support in the CT system’s frame of reference are common, caused by thermal drift or by the sample drying out.

  • An identified risk—these micro-displacements can generate blur, reconstruction artifacts and loss of effective resolution.
  • Automatic compensation—the function estimates these displacements throughout the scan and compensates for them at reconstruction, for sharper images and a higher effective resolution.

Phase contrast enhancement

Propagation-based phase contrast enhancement takes advantage of the long sample-to-detector distances available on all of our Nano-CT systems.
When X-rays propagate beyond the sample, the phase shifts generated in the material create interference at the detector plane. These edge-enhancement effects increase the visibility of subtle density variations and fine microstructural details, which are difficult to detect with conventional absorption contrast alone.

⇒ Increased detectability of low-contrast features and improved visualization of fine details

Phase contrast retrieval algorithm

While phase contrast significantly improves the visibility of fine details, it can also complicate image interpretation and quantitative analysis by altering the apparent absorption contrast.

The phase contrast retrieval algorithm restores the true material contrast, improving the sample/background separation and enabling more accurate quantitative characterization.

⇒ Better segmentation, improved quantitative analysis and more reliable results

Advanced artifact corrections

To guarantee optimal image quality, X-Act Reconstruction integrates advanced correction algorithms for artifacts, defective pixels and hot pixels, as well as for metal artifacts.

Beam hardening correction, for its part, improves image homogeneity when scanning highly absorbing samples, reducing reconstruction artifacts and improving quantitative accuracy.

These image enhancement tools produce cleaner, more consistent datasets, facilitating downstream image processing and ensuring more reliable scientific results.

Advanced reconstruction with Horus

For metal parts, multi-material assemblies or components that are difficult to penetrate, standard reconstruction algorithms reach their limits. Horus, our advanced reconstruction module, integrates directly into X-Act to drastically reduce artifacts and improve contrast on these demanding datasets—without any hardware upgrade to your CT system.

After reconstruction: post-processing

The 3D volume obtained at the end of the reconstruction is the basis for the optional post-processing step: segmentation, measurement, CAD comparison, defect detection, porosity analysis…

The volumes generated by X-Act Reconstruction can be exported directly to the leading analysis and visualization software on the market—VGSTUDIO MAX, Dragonfly or Avizo—to integrate seamlessly into the tools you already have in place.

This compatibility ensures smooth continuity between acquisition, reconstruction and the final use of the data, whichever software you choose for that last step.

FAQ: X-ACT reconstruction

What is X-Act Reconstruction software?
X-Act Reconstruction is the RX Solutions tool suite dedicated to transforming acquired projections into a usable 3D volume, natively integrated into X-Act.
What is the difference between X-Act Reconstruction and Horus?
X-Act Reconstruction covers the standard reconstruction tools included in the software (geometry, drift, phase contrast, artifacts). Horus is an advanced reconstruction module, designed specifically for metal, multi-material or highly attenuating parts, which goes further in reducing artifacts and improving contrast.
Can data acquired on a system other than RX Solutions be reconstructed?
Yes. X-Act’s reconstruction tools, notably geometric fine-tuning, make it possible to reconstruct datasets acquired on other imaging platforms, including synchrotrons.
Does the reconstruction require a new scan in case of a geometric defect or drift?
No. X-Act’s geometric correction and drift compensation tools make it possible to correct these defects directly at reconstruction, without having to rescan the sample.
What happens to the 3D volume once it is reconstructed?
The generated volume is the basis for the optional post-processing step—segmentation, measurement, CAD comparison—for the analysis and use of the results
