Mitutoyo, RX Solutions and Nemera: A Partnership Focused on Pharmaceutical Device Precision

by on 17 Sep 2025 at 14h59

At Nemera, in Neuenburg am Rhein, Germany, precision is non-negotiable. This company specializing in plastic medical device manufacturing stakes everything on dimensional accuracy to guarantee that every dispenser, inhaler, or injection pen delivers the exact prescribed medication dose. To achieve this, they rely on Mitutoyo's measurement and inspection technologies.

The Neuenburg plant has recently reached a new technological milestone by equipping itself with a high-resolution industrial tomography system, supplied by RX Solutions, a Mitutoyo partner. This cutting-edge technology supports the ultra-precise production of drug delivery devices for patients suffering from glaucoma, asthma, psoriasis, or diabetes. With its 700 employees and 13 production halls spanning 11,000 m², this site represents Nemera's largest production center.

The scale of the challenge is considerable: each year, Nemera plants produce over one billion distribution systems that supply healthcare in more than 54 countries. In this context, each activation must guarantee perfectly controlled dosing. Between drastic legal regulations and particularly strict industrial standards in the medical sector, measurement technology requirements reach extremely high levels.

Quality Controle above else

Upon entering Neuenburg's metrology center, one immediately understands why Nemera's motto "Patient Priority" makes perfect sense. The facility impresses with its scope: an entire room houses 24 three-dimensional measuring machines (CMMs) equipped with multiple probes for 3D measurement, while a second accommodates eight optical measuring devices. The technological arsenal is notably completed by a Contracer CV2100 contour measuring instrument. One common point unites all this equipment: they bear the Mitutoyo signature.

"Our partnership with Mitutoyo is built for the long term - we've been working together in complete confidence for 32 years," confides Sven Kister, Head of the Metrology Group. "We may be particularly demanding clients when it comes to measurement technology, but Mitutoyo always delivers. Whether it's Wolfgang Wassner, our preferred contact, or experts from other Mitutoyo sites for the most complex challenges, we systematically get quick and precise responses."
Nemera's quality commitment can also be read in its workforce. While eight specialists work at the heart of the metrology center, some fifty other collaborators continuously ensure quality control from decentralized stations, organized in three teams that rotate without interruption.

Integration of CT system

Neuenburg's technological park is now enriched with a high-resolution industrial tomography (CT) system by RX Solutions. To make this strategic choice, Nemera organized a true benchmark by inviting six specialized suppliers to present their solutions.
It was ultimately RX Solutions, a Mitutoyo partner, that managed to stand out thanks to a particularly convincing proposition.

"The EasyTom S from RX Solutions checked all our boxes," explains the team. "It perfectly combines scanning speed, high resolution, and ease of use - an ideal combo for our 3D metrology needs, whether standard tasks or advanced applications. Its scanning performance surpasses the competition, its resolution impresses, and its preparation remains child's play: you can prepare the parts to be analyzed in their supports outside the device, which saves precious time. Another major asset: native compatibility with our evaluation software. This transparent integration greatly facilitates measurement data exploitation - a crucial point for our certifications."

Nemera now exploits its CT technology to revolutionize its control processes: ultra-stable 3D measurement of components, fine detection of heterogeneities, and identification of cavities in materials. Tomography proves particularly valuable for analyzing micro injection-molded parts of 2 to 4 mm diameter. Gone is external subcontracting - this internalized capability generates substantial gains in time and budget.

Following a comparative selection, RX Solutions emerged as the best option: a solid innovator within a landscape of historical manufacturers, whose strategic cooperation with Mitutoyo provided additional guarantee.

"The equipment seduced us technically, and the automated sample loader is also an important point for the automation of our processes, but it was really the RX Solutions-Mitutoyo tandem that made the difference," emphasizes Sven Kister. "We knew that with this collaboration, we would always have quality support."

Several months after commissioning, RX Solutions' Easytom S has established itself as a pillar of internal quality control, particularly for analyzing parts that conventional methods couldn't decode correctly. Return on investment is already on the horizon: "We now surpass our former external provider's performance, with amortization expected within three years."

An Integrated Metrological Ecosystem Serving Performance

Nemera's metrology service impresses with the scope of its arsenal: approximately 3,400 tools and measuring instruments carefully catalogued in SAP. Autonomy constitutes a major asset - most of this equipment is not only born in internal design offices but also takes shape in the company's tooling workshop.

The time has come for standardization with an ambitious project: all new tooling, clamping systems, and workholders now rely on a common platform, each accompanied by its complete validation and qualification file. Mitutoyo supports Nemera in this transformation, notably through its KOMEG subsidiary based in Völklingen, Saarland, specialized in custom manufacturing of workholders and clamping devices.

On the metrology software side, Nemera also trusts the Mitutoyo ecosystem: MCOSMOS drives tactile measuring devices while QV-PAK manages optical devices. The arsenal is completed with specialized modules like MCOSMOS-GEOPAK and MeasurLink, which notably simplify compliance verification. Proof of this successful integration: all Mitutoyo machines communicate with SAP, including the fleet's veteran that proudly displays its 19 years of service.

Global Harmonization and Proprietary Product Development

Nemera's six production sites - distributed across France, Germany, Poland, Brazil, and the United States - are preparing to adopt a unified technological approach with the same measurement equipment and software on all continents.

This harmonization is accompanied by ambitious standardization work conducted jointly with Mitutoyo, in strict compliance with the new EN ISO 13485 directive governing medical devices. The objective: create a group reference standard that guarantees quality consistency on an international scale.

Simultaneously, Nemera is taking a new strategic step with the launch of its business unit dedicated to proprietary products. While other sites already develop and manufacture Nemera brand dispensers and dosing systems, Neuenburg joins this innovation dynamic. The German site has just designed its first product: a revolutionary pen for parenteral drug administration.

This rise in power is logically accompanied by technological investments: Nemera will install a metrological section dedicated to Neuenburg's "Own IP" unit, an expansion that naturally fits in continuity with the Mitutoyo partnership.

A Complete Technological Partnership Serving the Future

Nemera's Mitutoyo arsenal far exceeds tactile and optical measuring machines. The equipment manufacturer trusts an entire range of precision instruments: comparators, calipers, gauges, and many other tools essential to daily operations. This philosophy extends to the tooling manufacturing workshop, where high-precision milling machines rely on Mitutoyo measuring equipment, while laser measuring devices ensure calibration of electrical discharge machining equipment.

The investment dynamic continues: after 2024 acquisitions, Nemera is already programming the integration of two new Mitutoyo CMM machines for tactile measurement.
But for Sven Kister, the strength of this collaboration transcends the simple technical excellence of products: "Competence matters, certainly, but it's especially the human dimension that makes the difference. Faced with a measurement problem, no need for a hotline - a simple call to Wolfgang Wassner suffices. He and his colleagues always respond. We even benefit from Mitutoyo's AUKOM training to certify our collaborators as measurement technicians. That's a true global partnership that projects us together toward the future."
