Sample loader - automate your CT system in 24/7 mode

by on 21 Aug 2025 at 15h13
In modern industry, every minute of downtime represents a cost. Efficiency and productivity are critical factors for businesses. At RX Solutions, we understand these challenges. That's why we've developed the automatic sample loader, an innovation that transforms the use of your EasyTom S, L and XL CT systems.

This cutting-edge solution transforms your X-ray CT system into a semi-autonomous analysis solution, allowing you to scan multiple samples automatically and quickly, without operator intervention, during the day, in the evening and at weekends, optimizing your time and reducing your operating costs.

Why automate your CT scans?

Unlock your production capabitilities

By preloading a series of samples, you can launch analysis cycles that run automatically, at night and during weekends, without requiring operator presence.

  • Double your weekly scan capacity by exploiting night and weekend time slots.
  • Maximize tomograph utilization time: The operator doesn't need to be present to launch each part scan.
  • Meet increasing production rates (R&D, quality control, pre-production).
  • Secure your human resources: the operator loads parts once, then focuses on higher value-added tasks.
  • Reduce night and weekend costs without immobilizing the inspection line.

How does the sample loader work?

The internal sample loader integrates perfectly into your  EasyTom S, L ou XL environment.
It allows you to store and present multiple samples for 3D scanning. The sample loader integration can be included from the initial order or can be installed later.

The process is simple:
  • 1. You load the samples and configure the scans
  • 2. The machine automatically takes each sample
  • 3. It performs tomography according to your defined parameters
  • 4. It automatically moves to the next one
  • 5. Results are available for reconstruction and analysis
  • 6. If you have integrated macros for repeatable parts, the reconstruction and post-processing processes can also be automated.

EasyTom S: The compact solution

Our most compact model, the EasyTom S  is equipped with a sample loader, enabling both manufacturers and researchers to automate their systems and save time scanning small samples.

  • Loading: Manual directly on the loader
  • Capacity: up to 5 sample locations
  • Accepted dimensions: 5 parts ≤ Ø 47.5 mm or 3 parts ≤ Ø 75 mm
  • Maximum height: 160 mm
  • Advantage: Each slot can receive dedicated scan parameters and execute sequentially

EasyTom L: Extended autonomy and robot-ready

With the EasyTom L CT system loads and unloads samples manually from the door in an ergonomic manner. Once you're finished, a secure motorized arm rotates to store samples inside the system.

  • Loading/unloading: Manual from the door, internal ergonomic arm that unfolds to facilitate loading at human height. Loading can also be automated with the integration of a loading robot.
  • Capacity: up to 6 samples
  • Accepted dimensions: up to 6 samples of Ø70 mm, 3 samples of Ø120 mm
  • Maximum height: 220 mm
  • Advantage: Optimal position for external loading robot

EasyTom XL: High capacity solution

On the EasyTom XL, the loader is positioned directly in front of the cab entrance for a more ergonomic solution.

  • Loading/unloading: Loader placed in front of cabin entrance for optimal ergonomics
  • Maximum capacity: 10 samples
  • Accepted dimensions: 10 samples of Ø 45mm or 5 samples of Ø 90mm
  • Maximum height: 270 mm

All scan and reconstruction programming is done through our X-Act software.

ROI and measurable benefits

  • Increased operation: +30% to +50% scans performed per week
  • Reduced operator costs: More output, less operator presence
  • Repeatability & traceability: Creation of repeatable macros to launch a new batch of scans with just a few clicks
  • Reduced human error risk: single launch, no repeated manual input
  • Software productivity: time and productivity gains are not only for scan execution but can be automated through macros for reconstructions and post-processing on software like VG Studio or Dragonfly
  • Scalability & retrofit: the loader can be added later to an already installed EasyTom

  • Since the sample loader is integrated directly into the machine, there is no additional floor space required.
The robotic interface is not mandatory, but if you wish to use a robotic solution for tomograph loading/unloading, our systems are perfectly designed for it.

User case - The MNHN

The Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle de Paris has transformed its 3D digitization capacity through the acquisition of RX Solutions' EasyTom S, equipped with an automated sample loader that serves as the true catalyst for this operational revolution. This automation system, coupled with 3D printed sample holders and optimized by a dedicated software interface, enables rapid and automated scan sequencing that drastically reduces manual interventions while considerably increasing digitization capacity. This configuration proves particularly effective for processing large volumes of specimens with morphological similarities, as perfectly illustrated by the gastropod project of summer 2024 where up to 100 specimens per day could be scanned non-destructively, with sizes varying from 3mm to 10cm.

The sample loader thus fundamentally transforms the AST-RX platform workflows by enabling the transition from an artisanal approach to an industrial approach to scientific tomography, where the macro reload function saves and automatically applies optimal parameters for batch scans, freeing researchers, PhD students and students from repetitive tasks so they can focus on data analysis and scientific interpretation of results.

FAQ

FAQ

What is a sample loader for in CT scanning ?

The RX Solutions automatic sample loader is an in-house, quasi-autonomous analysis solution for our CT systems, enabling scans of several samples to be carried out automatically and rapidly, without operator intervention, during the day, evenings and weekends.

What's the difference between a sample loader and a robot-ready solution?

The sample loader, integrated into our systems, adds no footprint. It automatically sequences scans without manipulating the machine or cutting the X-rays: once the parameters have been set, different parts can be processed in succession. A robotized solution, on the other hand, feeds the CT system directly into the machine for in-line processing; it requires a safety perimeter and external space for the robot and part storage. It is ideal for rapidly scanning identical batches.

Can the sample loader be used in the evening and during weekends?

Once the parts have been installed on the loader and the scan parameters have been entered, the tomograph operates autonomously from the first scan to the last. This means that scans can be performed in the evening or over the weekend.

What is the difference with manual operation of my computed tomography system?

The main difference is that the CT scanner does not require the presence of an operator to launch the next scan, thanks to the sample loader. As long as there are scheduled scans, the system will operate autonomously.

How many parts per day can I scan with the sample loader?

This depends on the size of your CT scanner: depending on the system and the size of the sample, you can fit between 3 and 10 parts. Part size and material are also important in determining scan duration.

Can I put any type of part in the sample loader?

Of course, as long as the part passes into the sample loader and the material to be processed is in line with the power of your X-ray tube.

Can I really automate my scans from acquisition to post-processing?

Absolutely. While the sample loader allows you to automate the scan (acquisition) phase, you can also use macros to automate your reconstructions and the post-processing of a part once an identical scan has already been performed.
