Your CT needsHow to choose your Industrial X-ray CT system?

HomeOur systemsYour needs
Every tomography project has its own requirements. A research laboratory is not looking for the same thing as a production quality control line: resolution, material to be penetrated, part size, throughput, level of automation—each criterion points to a different machine configuration.

For 20 years, RX Solutions has been designing modular tomography systems able to adapt to these requirements rather than impose a fixed solution. From micro-CT to nano-CT, our generators, imagers, platforms and automation options combine to meet your use precisely, whether it is characterizing microstructures in research, detecting internal defects in quality control, or automating inspections in production.

That is why, to guide you, we start from your need: identify below the criterion that matters most to you—level of detail, material, part size, automation or type of analysis—and discover the suitable configuration.

What level of detail do you want to observe? Find the right resolution.

The level of detail you want to reach is a decisive criterion in choosing your tomography system. The smaller the features to be observed, the finer the resolution must be to distinguish them accurately.

As this diagram illustrates, the smaller the object to be analyzed, the higher the resolution required to characterize it. RX Solutions covers this entire spectrum thanks to 3 families of generators—Mesofocus, Microfocus, Nanofocus—integrated into its Explorer, Nano and Force lines, with accessible levels of detail from more than 35 µm down to 0.25 µm depending on the configuration.

What can you really see at each resolution level?

< 35 µm
5 - 20 µm
5µm
1µm
250 nm
Major foundry defects, blowholes and shrinkage…
< 35 µm
Porosities in injected parts, assembly and brazing defects
5 - 20 µm
Composite fibers, fine porosities, metal 3D-printing defects
5µm
Microcracks, material interfaces, bonding defects
1µm
Material microstructure, nanoporosities, submicron interfaces
250 nm

How do you determine the resolution you need?

A simple rule is to aim for a resolution at least three times finer than the defect you are looking for.
For example:

  • expected defect of 30 µm → target resolution of 10 µm;
  • expected defect of 10 µm → target resolution of 3 µm;
  • expected defect of 3 µm → target resolution below 1 µm.

Our experts help you define this level of detail so as to avoid oversizing the system while guaranteeing the quality of the analysis.

Submicron resolution – for ultra-fine analysis

For the finest characterization (down to 0.25 µm), our nanofocus generators deliver submicron resolution. This is the level required for microstructure analysis, advanced research or ultra-detailed inspection of critical parts. At this scale, it becomes possible to visualize details up to 400 times finer than a human hair.

Examples: analysis of material microstructures, characterization of powders for additive manufacturing, study of battery electrodes, observation of composite fibers, academic and scientific research…

Micro-CT resolution – the best compromise for industry

For the vast majority of inspection and quality control uses, our microfocus generators cover a resolution range of about 1 to 5 µm. This is the most versatile compromise between fineness of detail and speed of analysis, suited to research as well as production.

This resolution range already makes it possible to detect porosities, inclusions, delaminations or internal defects that are invisible to visual inspection.

Examples: inspection of electronic components, an injection-molded plastic part or a lithium-ion battery, additive manufacturing quality control, composite inspection…

Mesofocus resolution for large parts

For the inspection of larger parts, or in contexts where speed of analysis takes priority over level of detail (beyond 35 µm), our mesofocus generators provide the power needed to penetrate thicker parts while keeping a usable image. Even though the resolution is less fine, these systems make it possible to reveal internal defects that conventional methods cannot detect.

Examples: inspection of aerospace parts, inspection of a titanium medical implant, analysis of automotive components, inspection of complex metal subassemblies.

Density alone is not enough

Not all materials react to X-rays in the same way. Their density and thickness directly influence the system’s ability to penetrate them and produce an image usable for reconstruction.
The denser the material, the higher the voltage (kV) the generator needs to penetrate it and obtain a usable image.

At RX Solutions, we adapt the system configuration—notably the generator—to ensure the right compromise between material penetration and image quality.

Epaisseur matière - tomographie industrielle
Chaque type de générateur correspond à une capacité de pénétration différente selon le matériau et son épaisseur

Light materials: priority to fineness of detail, maximize resolution

Carbon, polymers and aluminum are low-absorbing materials and let X-rays through easily.

They can therefore be inspected with lower-power generators, which makes it possible to favor a very fine resolution. You will be able to observe porosities, cracks, fibers, inclusions and internal geometries… Generators between 110 and 160 kV are often used—ideal for composites, light metals and plastic parts.

Intermediate materials and light alloys: the best compromise between performance and versatility

Aluminum, titanium or technical alloys represent one of the most frequent cases in industrial quality control, where both precision and efficiency are sought.

These materials require a balance between penetration capability and level of detail. Our generators up to 230 kV provide enough power for these cases while retaining good resolution.

Dense materials: revealing the invisible despite the thickness

Copper, iron and thick metal parts require a much higher voltage than other materials. Our high-energy generators, up to 450 kV, can penetrate up to 35 mm of copper while keeping a sharp image—for the inspection of dense parts or complex assemblies.

Multi-material assemblies: one of the most complex challenges

In many industrial applications, parts are not made of a single material.

For assemblies combining several materials of different densities, inspection is more complex: the thicknesses traversed add up, and reconstruction artifacts can appear at the interfaces between materials.

RX Solutions offers dedicated software solutions—notably Horus alongside X-Act software—to master this complexity and guarantee a reliable reconstruction.

Automation for CT system

What level of automation and modularity for your CT system?

Beyond the choice of generator, RX Solutions offers different levels of automation and modularity to gain productivity, ease of use and day-to-day reliability.

A research laboratory does not have the same expectations as a testing center or an industrial production line. Some users favor flexibility and versatility, while others seek advanced automation to increase throughput and reduce manual handling.

Thanks to its modular architecture, RX Solutions makes it possible to adapt each system to your operating constraints, with automation solutions and accessories that can be integrated at installation or added as your needs evolve.

Reduce handling through automation

When analyses are repeated across a large number of samples, automation improves productivity while limiting operator intervention.

RX Solutions offers several levels of automation:
  • Automated sample loading – Sample loaders make it possible to automate the sequential loading of small batches and chain acquisitions with a minimum of human intervention.
  • Autoloading – For applications requiring a higher throughput, autoloading solutions fully automate the loading and unloading of parts to ensure continuous operation.

Learn more about the internal sample loader

Adapt the configuration to each inspection

Some applications require different settings depending on the materials inspected, the resolutions sought or the protocols used.

To limit interruptions and keep the system running smoothly, several reconfiguration options are available:

  • Filter changer – Automatically selects the filter suited to the analysis without manual intervention.
  • Interchangeable detector mount – Makes it easy to change the detector in a few moments, so the system can quickly adapt to different inspection configurations.

Improve ease of use and safety

Modularity is not only about productivity. It also contributes to protecting the system, operator safety and everyday ease of use.
Depending on needs, different options can be integrated:

  • Anti-collision lidar to protect the equipment during movements;
  • Glass doors to view the analysis area safely;
  • Motorized centering stage to make part positioning easier;
  • Dedicated cells for tests under stress for in situ and 4D CT applications.

CT applications

What type of tomographic analysis do you want to perform?

Resolution, material, part size and level of automation define the architecture of the tomography system. The final choice also depends on the type of analysis you want to perform.

Quality control, material characterization, metrology, porosity analysis, battery studies, additive manufacturing, or scientific research: each application has specific requirements in terms of acquisition, reconstruction and data processing.

At RX Solutions, our systems can be configured to meet a wide variety of industrial and scientific applications.

FAQ: Choosing your industrial CT system

How do you choose an industrial CT system?
The choice depends mainly on the level of detail required, the material to be inspected, the size of the parts, the desired level of automation and the type of analysis to be carried out.
What is the maximum resolution that an RX Solutions CT system can reach?
Depending on the configuration, our nanofocus generators can reach submicron resolution, down to 0.25 µm. This is the level required for microstructure analysis or ultra-detailed inspection of critical parts.
What is the difference between Mesofocus, Microfocus and Nanofocus?
These are three families of generators, each suited to a different level of detail: Mesofocus for large parts (beyond 35 µm), Microfocus for the majority of inspection uses (about 1 to 5 µm), and Nanofocus for submicron analysis (down to 0.40 µm). The smaller the object to be observed, the finer the resolution must be.
Can you inspect a part made of several different materials?
Yes, but inspection is more complex: the thicknesses traversed add up and reconstruction artifacts can appear at the interfaces between materials. RX Solutions offers dedicated software solutions, notably Horus alongside X-Act, to guarantee a reliable reconstruction.
What is the maximum part size that an RX Solutions CT system can accommodate?
Our platforms cover a wide range of sizes, from the compact sample (< Ø300 × 410 mm, < 5 kg) on the EasyTom S up to parts exceeding Ø1,100 mm and up to 100 kg on the UltraTom. For oversized dimensions or complex geometries, RX Solutions designs custom-made solutions.
Can a tomography system be upgraded?
RX Solutions solutions are modular and can integrate different levels of automation and complementary equipment.
Can you quickly switch configuration between two inspections?
Yes. Thanks to the automatic filter changer (selection of the suitable filter without manual intervention) and the interchangeable detector mount (detector change in a few moments), the system adapts quickly to different inspection protocols.
What type of analysis can you perform with an RX Solutions CT system?
Quality control, material characterization, metrology, porosity analysis, battery studies, additive manufacturing or scientific research: our systems can be configured for many applications, including microstructure characterization, detection of porosities and inclusions, composite fiber analysis, weld inspection, assembly checks and 4D inspection.
